Ullukkut! Thank you for joining the Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Katujjiqatigiit
Embrace Life Council's (IIKELC) monthly newsletter!

We are Nunavut's territory-wide suicide prevention non-profit organization and our mission is to support and encourage Nunavummiut to embrace life. We are committed to offering mental health resources and opportunities to promote community wellness among youth and adults throughout Nunavut.

In honour of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, please enjoy this write up from Jaydene Nipi Pilakapsi.

Nunavut is an isolated but growing Territory in Canada that faces many great challenges when it comes to mental health awareness. My name is Jaydene Nipi Pilakapsi, I am an Inuk that grew up in Rankin Inlet; pursuing my education in Iqaluit to advocate for my Territory as a Social Service Worker. I am currently doing my first-year practicum with Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Katujjiqatigiit Embrace Life Council as a student for the two-year social service worker program. Nunavut is filled with strong and resilient individuals that have a bright potential in improving healthier communities and the availability of resources for the population. Mental health in Nunavut needs more sunlight, and you carry the spark. You matter, you make a difference, you are enough. Reach out and be heard.

AJUNnGI!
Rankin Inlet March Sobriety Program

This program was open to community members of Rankin Inlet who were 16+ as an incentive to encourage sobriety. The community gave an overwhelmingly positive response and a total of 217 residents participated!

Participants learned how to create various traditional and non-traditional crafts such as beading, wall hangings, lino printing, caribou tufting, and mitt making. They had the opportunity to pick up weekly crafting kits to keep them busy throughout the week as well as drop in at the IIKELC office. We learned that this program was extremely popular with youth and that many residents in Rankin Inlet wanted to be sober.

This program allowed the participants to enjoy a creative & safe way to release their emotions in a positive way!

These workshops include ASIST and Reach Out (our suicide prevention workshops), Trauma Informed Practice, Our Children Our Responsibility (a workshop on child sexual abuse prevention), Talking to Children About Suicide, and others which can be found here. If you or your community are interested in hosting a workshop please don't hesitate to reach out; we would love to visit your community and share these resources!
