The Federal Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into a recent incident in a Las Vegas public high school after a Jewish non-verbal student with autism had a swastika carved into his back. The student wears a yarmulke at school and is accompanied by a service dog and an assistant.
The mother of the student said in an interview with The Jewish Press that her son returned home on March 9 with his service dog’s equipment bag torn up and the hate symbol etched into his skin. The FBI is in contact with local law enforcement and are investigating the incident as a hate crime.
The violent nature of the incident has compelled users online to share the story to raise awareness and many expressed outrage and disbelief that an event of this magnitude took place, especially during Autism Awareness Month.

Diane Abbott, a Member of the British Parliament (MP) since 1987 and the first black woman elected, was criticized this week after she penned a letter to The Observer claiming Jewish people “are not all their lives subject to racism.” Abbott’s statement received swift backlash from fellow politicians and people on social media, with Jewish Labour MP Dame Margaret Hodge calling Abbott’s statements "deeply offensive and deeply distressing." Abbott apologized after the backlash, attributing the mistake to an initial draft being sent, and acknowledged that "racism takes many forms, and it is completely undeniable that Jewish people have suffered its monstrous effects."
Abbott was suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation. On social media, many people compared Abbott to former Leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn, for whom she served as Shadow Home Secretary, and who was also suspended from the Labour Party over allegations of antisemitism.
Andrew Bridgen, a British politician who has served as an MP since 2010, was permanently expelled from the Conservative Party this month following his tweet in January, which compared the Covid-19 vaccine to the Holocaust.
