Hello First name / Friend,, 64 Million Artists are taking a pause. Last year we tried, for the first time, taking the month of August off as a team - to reflect and rest after a time of navigating the pandemic and burnout. Read more about the original decision here. We found it worked for us to have a moment of collective pause and will be doing it again this year. |
|
Why? “For us, as well as allowing a deep moment of rest from the treadmill of work and life; it’s about the opportunity to be present in other areas, including different parts of our creativity. Staff may also have caring responsibilities, children, are managing chronic illness, or want to spend quality time with family and friends. Weekends are great, but quite often they are filled with the invisible or unpaid work of life, which doesn’t always allow enough time for rest or reset. …We understand that it’s a privilege to have the chance to work this way and know that it isn’t available to all right now. We carefully consider our values and check we’re walking our talk… If we’re well rested, we can do the best for our communities and be more intentional and present in that.” Laura Saxton, Head of Culture and Strategy at 64 Million Artists |

Resting, pausing, taking a break, looks different for each of us. In our newsletter The Creative Switch, we’ve shared some things we’ve been reading and listening to that have broadened our thinking on rest, and why it’s important to us for different reasons. |

An invitation… We usually share The Weekly Challenge every Monday throughout the year, but through August our invitation to you is this…. Spend the time you might use doing a creative prompt each week to explore what taking a break, a pause or resting looks like to you. You could spend 10 minutes simply daydreaming and see what comes up. As a team, we sat around a table together and discussed what rest means to each of us and here are some of the thoughts that came up: |

Pictured above is a quotation graphic that reads “Being present, Choices, Intuition and Awareness, Time To Be, Balance, Varied, Space, Sensory Rest, Rest from the Expectation of Others, How can we find freedom from expectations of productivity?” |

We’ll be back with The Weekly Challenge on Monday 4th September, until then if you’re looking for creative inspiration, you can revisit past challenges (or submit your own!) here. See you in September, |
