I was sitting at our kitchen table when my son came and sat down next to me. I had been reading through your responses to this week's community spotlight question, “Share something that makes you proud," and I asked him the same question. He paused for a minute and then said, “Having you as my mom." I felt a lump in my throat. I pushed him again, “What about yourself? What's your proudest accomplishment?” To which he responded, “Making you smile.” I WAS NOT WELL YOU GUYS. |

This sweet boy and his wise words. |
|
I came across a Ted Talk this week by Sam Berns, a beautiful child that was born with a rare genetic disorder called progeria. He shared his philosophy to living a happy life, and I found it incredibly inspiring. If you have 12 minutes, it's worth listening directly from that sweet boy. Below is a highlight. Of the 3 pillars of happiness that he shared, it was the first that really resonated with me: Be okay with what you can't do, because there is so much you CAN do. I don't know if it's the timing of my life (with the loss of my vision and ability to drive), but his words hit me like a ton of bricks this week. He said people often ask him about the challenges of living with his condition, but that he doesn't focus on those. Instead, he chooses to focus on the things he can do. He said he works hard not wasting energy feeling bad for himself, because when he does, he gets stuck in a place where there is no room for other emotions. This kid was wise beyond his years. I highly recommend watching, it will shake things back into much needed perspective for anyone that needs it. |
