« When PLUME asked me to talk about the text that had marked me for life, I contemplated my most beloved books: The Ravishing of Lol Stein by Marguerite Duras, the letters of Camille Claudel, Le dur désir de durer by Paul Éluard. |
There's no shortage of texts that have touched me. But the one I have in mind is a different story. |
The text that changed my life was a note from my mother. |
As soon as I think about it, the answer seems so obvious. |
I remember my first summers away at camp. I would drag my feet on the way there, eager for one thing: to go home and be safe with my mother. |
It was the middle of July and I'd been in Ardèche for a week. |
It was hard for me to fit in with the other children; everything required an overwhelming amount of effort. It was like I didn't belong. The mail was handed out every morning, a ritual I wouldn't have missed for the world. My mother always sent me a letter or package before I left, so I wouldn't feel so lonely when I got there. I was lucky enough to grow up with that kind of mom. |

« We’re waiting for you to go to the beach. » |
That day, I was reading one of her postcards. I broke down in tears halfway through. I read, We’re waiting for you to go to the beach. Every night that followed, I thought about the note and felt close to her, despite the distance. It made me simultaneously happy and upset, a bit like when you hold your finger extremely close to a flame and leave it there for a few seconds too long. In retrospect, I don't understand why that sentence made such an impact. And yet, writing those few words still makes my stomach clench at almost 33 years old. I think that postcard is still at my mother’s house, carefully tucked away in a box. » |
