"Long-lasting transformation comes from the “we” — from the will to build instead of the fear of losing. It comes from the richness of our diversity instead of the demonizing of our differences.” A Growing Culture

These days I struggle to convey how I feel when I see and read about the human suffering happening in communities throughout the world. Toggling between anger and outrage, compassion and empathy, I, like many of us, am holding questions and wonder, why? And more to the point, what can we do? How do we show up in these moments?

Extending compassion, like a prayer through time and space, might sound easy, but it requires intention. It is important to create time to reflect on what is going on, from the mass shootings to the Middle East to the southern borders, as suffering does not happen in a vacuum.

The offering that feels most resonant, but somewhat out of reach, is solidarity. The article Reimagining Solidarity: Moving towards a culture of shared growth, by A Growing Culture, featured in this newsletter, evokes questions. In what capacity can I stand in solidarity with people so far away, who I will never know, much less understand their level of trauma, loss and grief? How is their story intertwined with mine?

So much healing is needed. During this season of harvest I find comfort in small things. I appreciate the orange and gold hues of sunlight, the taste of warm winter squash, and the sound of the blue jays outside my window. I’m grateful for the work I do and how it is rooted in the community. I find meaning in relationships.

As we navigate this time, let us remember; in every gesture, however small, there lives the potential for presence, peace and well being.
