Ullukkut! Thank you for joining the Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Katujjiqatigiit Embrace Life Council's (IIKELC) bi-monthly newsletter. We are Nunavut's territory-wide suicide prevention non-profit organization and our mission is to support and encourage Nunavummiut to embrace life. We are committed to offering mental health resources and opportunities to promote community wellness among youth and adults throughout Nunavut.

Please enjoy this message from one of our
Program Development Coordinators, Kara Ashley.

We are honoured to announce that Isaksimagit Inuusirmi Katujjiqatigiit Embrace Life Council has been named a Champion of Mental Health and awarded the Best Community Organization of 2023 by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) for providing great public service to Nunavummiut experiencing mental illness.

Each year CAMIMH recognizes 7 Canadians whose work has helped to advance the mental health agenda across the country and awardees are nominated by peers and community members. The selection committee was comprised of various organizations representing individuals with mental illness, their families, and caregivers, as well as healthcare professionals.

This year’s champions were recognized at Parliament Hill on October 3rd during Mental Health Awareness Week and Sheila Levy, IIKELC’s vice president, was present to accept the award on behalf of our organization. Levy shared some beautiful insights after her acceptance of what it means to support Nunavummiut; “I think whatever we can do, whether it’s in terms of helping with addictions, helping with trauma from their past, helping build families, have community support, having community activities and resources that they can turn to is really, really important so that they can grow up to feel that they are making a contribution to their own life, their family and their community life”.

Co-chairperson of CAMIMH, Florence Budden, also shared inspiring words as she addressed the audience and recipients by saying, “These extraordinary individuals symbolize empathy, compassion, and social responsibility through their relentless efforts and innovative approaches, leading the charge in eradicating stigma and ensuring all Canadians have ready access to the mental health support they require”.

We would like to thank all Nunavummiut for their continued support and guidance. Qujannamiik!
