Why you keep going.

One of our CMU McNair scholars finished her Ph.D. this week and became Dr. Alex Christmas. It's a huge achievement for Alex and a huge success for McNair. I've been doing this work for twenty years, and our students never cease to amaze me.

I remember when Alex did her McNair summer, which included doing research and exploring options for her future. She didn't know what path to take! What I remember most about Alex is how hard she kept working, every opportunity she took advantage of, and that she kept seeking. ✨

It's cliche to say how hard the road might become and that you might want to give up. The road is challenging for every TRIO student and McNair scholar pursuing their dreams. The important thing is that you keep traveling the road.

Your road.

Alex's road appeared through her diligence and hard work. I didn't know you could get a Ph.D. in Dance Studies until Alex got her full-ride offer to attend The Ohio State University for her doctorate. Her work centers around racial battle fatigue in Black women educators at predominantly White institutions.

The paper you're writing or the chapter you're memorizing might seem inconsequential at the moment. But every paper, every test and presentation brings you closer to your degree and professional goals. The world needs your knowledge, expertise and your gifts.

You keep going because the world needs to hear your voice. You stay focused on your goals to make them a reality. We're so proud of you, Dr. Christmas! We're proud of your fellow TRIO/McNair scholars following in your footsteps.

We appreciate you paving the way. ✨
