Château Quintus “Le Dragon de Quintus” Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (2016) $210 per bottle Locker Member Price: $126 per bottle
In 1935, American financier and businessman Clarence Dillon purchased Château Haut-Brion and moved his family to Paris. The estate passed down through two generations to his grand-daughter, Joan, who married Prince Charles of Luxembourg, bringing European royalty into the Domaine. It was during her tenure that the Château acquired Château La Mission Haut-Brion in 1983. Today, the Château is overseen by Prince Robert of Luxembourg — great-grand-son of Mr. Clarence Dillon and son of Princess Joan Dillon. In 2005 Prince Robert established Clarence Dillon Wines, now one of the most prestigious fine wine négociants in Bordeaux. Château Quintus is an ancient vineyard with an extraordinary past, present and future. Prince Robert purchased three Grand Cru Claseé chateaux (Château Tertre Daugay in 2011, Château L’Arrosee in 2013, Château Grand Pontet in 2021) that are today’s Château Quintus. The Gallo-Romans, creators of the vineyards of Saint-Emilion, had the habit of naming their 5th child Quintus (fifth). Domaine Clarence Dillon decided to pay homage to its glorious predecessors by re-baptizing this growth Château Quintus. This wine will take its natural place as an equal alongside the red and white wines of Château Haut-Brion (the bottle shape of which inspired the design for Château Quintus) and Château La Mission Haut-Brion, thereby becoming the 5th child in this illustrious family. Le Dragon de Quintus is named for the famed and ancient dragon statue which overlooks the Estate vineyards. Merlot represents 66% of the surface in production along with 26% of Cabernet Franc and 8% of Cabernet Sauvignon. Sustainable viticulture management protects the terroir, through the most stringent intra-plot management and selection during winemaking. The 2016 Vintage is a harmonious blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Discreet and elegant oak accompany vibrant fruit character with a voluptuous full-body texture, making this “the most full and complete vintage” since acquisition of the property in 2011. |

2019 Bodegas Valtravieso Crianza Ribera del Duero, Spain
$75 per bottle Locker Member Price: $45 per bottle

Valtravieso, the highest winery on Ribera del Duero’s ancient Castilian plateau, some 3,000 feet above sea level, has garnered high praise since its first release in 1994. The advantages of these high vineyards are considerable. The wines express flavor freshness and elegance, and deliver bright acidity and aromatics in spades. The unique link between character and the environment has always been a strong point of the Ribera del Duero DO; the landscape is harsh and unpredictable, but produces wines with rich personality. Primarily dedicated to Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero’s flagship variety, Valtravieso expanded their holdings with plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Winemaker Ricardo Velasco blends an experimental flair with traditional winemaking practices and natural vineyard work. The 2019 Crianza is comprised of 99% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the “La Revilla” estate at just over 3,000 feet in elevation. The vines are planted in limestone soils marked by veins of clay. The goblet pruned vines are on average 25 years old. Maturation is two-part and occurs over 12 months in 90% French oak barrels and 10% American oak barrels followed by an additional year in bottle. Cherry red with medium-high color density. Fruity aromas of blackcurrant and strawberry compote with spicy and toasted notes. Pleasant on the palate with fine, well-integrated tannins, precise volume and a fresh mouthfeel thanks to its lively acidity. |
