On Tuesday night I thought to myself, why not try an at-home hair highlighting kit? I have absolutely zero experience with this, but the woman on the box looked happy and that was enough to convince me this was a fantastic idea. Which is exactly what people say to themselves right before they're about do some really stupid sh*t.And stupid sh*t is exactly what I did. Much to my surprise, my hair looked awful when I was done.
As most of you who follow me on Instagram already know, I turned my hair into a shade of orange only meant for the Las Vegas Strip. Luckily I was able to get in to the salon for an emergency toner, but please let this serve as a reminder not to highlight your hair at home. Not that you need this reminder, but let's pretend this was helpful.
Will this stop me from participating in self destructive decisions in the future? Likely not. But time will tell.
Weekly fun fact you didn't ask for
Speaking of hair, if you ever need a tip for growth…
Loved this podcast episode
Listened to a mental health doctor on The Diary of a CEO this week. Lot of emerging science around mental health/stress/anxiety, loved this episode. Highly recommend listening, but sharing a few notes I found especially fascinating.
I had no idea there was a gut/brain connection, and that much of our mental health can be attributed to our gut. There's a dedicated group of healthy bacteria in your gut who's sole function is to manage mood and other mental health. There are 3 to 5 times more serotonin (the happy hormone) receptors in our gut than our brain. She called the gut our “second brain," and said we can reset our stress by resetting our gut/brain connection. LIKE WHAT??
She recommends “Lifetime in a day” to all her patients. What this means is, there are 6 areas that make up the arch of a long and meaningful life and the prescription is to bring those 6 areas into every day, even if for a minute or two. So when your head hits the pillow at night, you feel that sense of satisfaction. Rough notes on those 6 areas below:
1) Childhood (spend a few minutes a day of wonder or play, 2) Work (doing something that is paid or unpaid that gives you a sense of meaning and accomplishment) 3) Solitude (spending time alone to reflect 4) Vacation (spend time doing something you love, for example, a musical instrument 5) Family (spend time in community with loved ones, could even be a phone call) 6) Retirement (spend a few minutes thinking about your day, what worked what didn't).
The episode is almost 2 hours long, she talks about so many interesting things, like how sitting is increasing your anxiety. I also found the conversation around consuming news especially fascinating. There's a fine line between being an informed citizen, and protecting our mental health, and a fine line between consuming and over consuming. Anyway, linking it here, worth the listen if you have the time.
