A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
Don't you love to see progress, First name / friend? Progress in your business, progress on a home renovation project, or progress on cleaning out your overflowing email inbox.
On a nature walk this past week, I saw a beautiful example of progress in the rhododendron bushes along the path. It was so inspiring to see blossoms in various stages on the same bush. What progress have you seen in your personal or business life lately? I'd love to hear about it! Please reply to this email and let me know.
By the way, if you're struggling with a lack of progress on something and want to share that with me, feel free. I can be your accountability partner! 😊 |

Online Tools I Spotted This Week: |
|
I love discovering online tools that help me do my work more efficiently. I spotted two tools this week and wanted to share them with you: - Heurio: If you proofread or edit websites for clients, you might enjoy this tool. It allows you to mark spots on web pages where you've spotted errors. Then you share those “pins” with the client. Interesting!
- Spark: I signed up for a free trial of this email tool this week. Spark says it helps users “master their inbox” (or inboxes in my case). I love their tagline: “Smart. Focused. Email.” Fingers crossed that this tool will help me. 🤞🏻

I've seen this mistake a few times recently. Grill usually has something to do with food (e.g., to grill a steak). Grille refers to a protective cover or grate (like the air conditioning vents in this screenshot or the grille on the front of a car).💡 |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |
|
Erika from E.S. Editing Services |
|
The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit? I work on speculative fiction, anthologies/short story collections, and some nonfiction.
- Did you complete a training course for proofreaders, or are you self-taught? I got my start doing an editing internship and worked in-house for a publisher. Then after a year I decided to start my own editing business and have completed lots of online courses through professional organizations.
- What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing business? I love being my own boss. I really value having the autonomy to schedule my time in ways that suit me best. And I love being able to cowork via Zoom with other editors during my workday!
- What causes you the most frustration in your business? The highs and lows of freelance life. Keeping up with marketing and showing up on social media while also doing the actual editing work can be such a juggling act!
- What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
It's okay to be a generalist and try different things (especially if you're a multipotentialite). You don't necessarily need to stick to one niche. Having various types of clients to suit different and shifting interests is a great way to do business. What success looks like in your editing business is up to you, so build a business where you can thrive!

Plant of the Week: Heartleaf Philodendron |
|
I wasn't sure if this plant would be happy hanging by my bedroom window (the room is quite dark in the mornings). But he's thriving with exposure to afternoon and evening sun. In fact, I have to give him a haircut periodically because the vines get so long, making it difficult to make the bed. If you're looking for a houseplant that isn't fussy, consider a heartleaf philodendron. I love mine!
