Hi friend,

This month, we’re having a pretty special event in the Body Liberation Blanket Fort. Dalia Kinsey, author of Decolonizing Wellness, will be leading a discussion circle on Saturday, September 28 for healthcare providers to:
  • Explore weight neutrality and healthcare
  • Find and question their biases around body size
  • Discuss how body neutrality, fatphobia, and the BIPOC experience intersect in health care
  • Share and explore their body stories
Our experiences with our own bodies are reflected in the way we interact with patients and clients, so show up ready to do some emotional work in journaling exercises and discussions.

This event is limited to Blanket Fort members who are healthcare providers and those who use Health at Every Size® principles professionally, to allow providers to be vulnerable and prevent well-meaning but insensitive comments from harming community members.

Also! I'm selling a bunch of household goods, books, original art and other items for a disabled friend to help her with living expenses.

If you're interested, please check out my Marketplace listings! Cash + pickup in Renton Highlands, WA.

Now, on to this week's letter:

Marilyn Wann is one of the fat activists I admire the most, who's been fighting for fat justice and rights since I was knee-high. She's also the author of the book Fat!So?, and you can learn more about her here.

Marilyn recently shared a reply she'd written to a request for her expertise that was so strong and beautiful, and graciously allowed me to share it with you as well. The context is below, with a link to read the entire response.

The Conversation
Here's what's interesting me this week:

» Allyship opportunity: "If you know Angel you know she is the first person to step up and mobilize a community in order to help someone in need. Now she is in a position where she really needs us to do the same." (see)

» Allyship opportunity: "Respect Black women’s labor! I didn’t ask for these problems unfortunately the state decided that mental health professionals in our state don’t matter & shouldn’t be reimbursed in a timely way but I’m still fighting for my clients/community even if I can barely pay my own bills" (see)

» Allyship opportunity: "Scarleteen was my main form of sex ed growing up (since my high school’s info was abysmal)—they do incredible work and have been wonderfully inclusive of LGBTQ people across the spectrum for years. Highly highly recommend supporting them if you’ve got a couple $ to spare" (see)

» Upcoming: Fat-Tea and BIPOC Fat-Tea (see)

» Registering: Self Care Explorers Club (see)

» Beyond The Ideal is a space to ponder body stuff, queerness, masculinity, and how to move towards connection with our bodies. (see)

From Marilyn Wann:

Someone I crossed paths with decades ago emailed me this week to ask for my input on some work product. Maybe they would quote me! That person and a cc’ed colleague have job titles that reference marketing and strategy and diversity and cross cultural stuff. They work at some kind of health consulting firm that’s currently advising a company that creates content that patients encounter in medical settings.

And the topic they are working on…O-word.

They’ve done a survey of fat people and they’ve written a report! What do the fatties want? And by the way, why are they so fat? And how can you optimize profits…er, show fat patients how much you care…while they wait to see a medical professional?

Unapologetically fat,
