what even is
performance in 2024?
a conversation with
Desi P. Shelton
TAHIRA
John Jarboe
A young artist asked me recently: What are your thoughts on the performing arts world?

And I said: Not sure I even know what that is anymore.

The pandemic, the closing of performing arts spaces temporarily and permanently, the confusing return(s) to gathering in public, ongoing conversations about compensation and working conditions–the performance world has, like everybody, been through a lot.

I wanted to talk with some artists whose work and insights I have long admired about what they are seeing and building.

+ Desi P. Shelton, playwright, performer, and founder of Camden Rep.
+ TAHIRA, storyteller and songwriter performing across all contexts and communities.
+ John Jarboe, performer, writer, director, and founder of the Bearded Ladies.

Let's get into it. What are performing artists up to? What are the possible futures we're building today? What's urgent? What's next?

Come share your thoughts and questions. And a bev.

I am writing to you because you took an Artists U workshop or downloaded Making Your Life as an Artist. Focus and attention are essential to artists, so if these emails take up your time without giving you something in return, please do hit the unsubscribe button and go make art.

Also, out of respect for you and for myself, I only send an email when I have something to say.
