Artists are incredibly capable. Do-it-yourself is our superpower.

But too often, do-it-yourself becomes do-everything-yourself. It becomes do-it-alone.

Here is the brand new Not Doing It Alone compendium, thoughts from a few hundred artists—including many of you, thank you!—on hiring, outsourcing, work trades, and volunteers.

I found their wisdom, experience, and humor deeply comforting.

Here are some excerpts:

Clear is kind.

I must either believe I deserve help, or act from a place of what if I believed I deserve it?

Have the money conversation, then put everything in writing.

Be as demanding as you are nice.

It's really okay to be the CEO of your projects and career, to be the big boss bitch, to spend your hard earned money paying someone else to do what you don't want to do. You are buying freedom.

Is this kind to me? I ask that question when choosing people to work with. Will having them on my team be a kindness to me?

Not just regarding artwork, but life in general, allow yourself the vulnerability to ask for help. It is not an indication of failure or something to apologize for.

Your value is not tied to how willing you are to burn yourself out.

I am writing to you because you took an Artists U workshop or downloaded Making Your Life as an Artist. Focus and attention are essential to artists, so if these emails take up your time without giving you something in return, please do hit the unsubscribe button and go make art.

Also, out of respect for you and for myself, I only send an email when I have something to say.
