A Note from Julie, the Greenhouse Curator: |
|
You may remember that my glasses recently broke (I told the sad story in Issue 76). My husband patched them up so I could wear them while driving, but I definitely needed an updated prescription and a new pair of glasses. I got my new glasses this week, and I didn’t realize how different my old prescription was from my new one. Yikes! The doctor prescribed progressive lenses, which help me see clearly at all distances: near (reading), intermediate (computer work), and far (driving). The prescription shifts gradually across the lens, allowing my eyes to move between zones without harsh jumps or lines. |
|
My new progressive lenses made me think about our work as proofreaders and editors. We do this kind of shifting all the time: - Up close – catching the tiniest punctuation or spelling error
- Midrange – making sure the document flows smoothly and sounds natural
- Far away – keeping an eye on where we’re headed in our business
When we have the right tools and habits to support each type of focus, the whole process feels a little smoother—and a lot less tiring.
Have you made any changes in your life or business lately? Maybe some new tools, better routines, or small upgrades that helped you feel clearer or more focused? I’d love to hear what’s working for you right now. Reply and let me know. |

I’m testing out a new idea: one-on-one conversations with proofreaders and editors to explore the frustrations or “I’m stuck” moments you're facing in your business. It doesn’t matter whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been doing this for years; all are welcome. I’m also hoping these conversations will help me learn what kinds of resources to create next inside The Proofreader Greenhouse, so your insight could help more people than you realize. To start, I’m offering a free 30-minute session to three different people just to see what I learn and whether this could become a regular offering. I’ll be choosing three people at random from those who reach out by Friday, April 18. - Your business name
- Your website and/or social media page(s)
- At least 3 struggles you’re facing in your business
That’s it! I’ll follow up directly if your name is chosen.
And if this turns into something more down the road, you'll be the first to know. 🌱 |

Favorite LinkedIn Posts This Week: |

Here are three posts I enjoyed reading on LinkedIn this week: - Let go of the perfectionism myth: As someone who struggles with perfectionism, I appreciated Lisa's reminder that being great at your craft doesn’t mean chasing perfection. It’s about delivering consistent, high-quality work without expecting superhuman results. ✨
- Satisfying snips and smart edits: Amanda shows us how to trim fluff without losing clarity or impact. It’s so satisfying to see how a few thoughtful cuts can make writing tighter, cleaner, and more powerful. ✂️
- Turn happy clients into more referrals: We're often intimidated by the idea of asking for client referrals, but Ilise encourages us to tap into our current client base to generate more business. 🤝

To “slog through” means to push your way through a task or situation that feels difficult, slow, or boring. 💡 Example: Lauren had to slog through a mountain of emails before she could start any real work. Catch of the Week screenshots come from my transcript proofreading. I can't change what a person said, but I can make sure words are spelled correctly and punctuation marks are in the right spots. If you're interested in learning more about transcript proofreading, I wrote an article about it here. |

This Week's Featured Proofreader or Editor: |
|
Shelby from Jump Off the Page Editing |

The Proofreader Greenhouse asked: - What type of content do you proofread or edit?
Mostly nonfiction: memoir, business, educational content, etc. - Did you complete training for proofreading or editing?
I have completed the Knowadays Becoming a Proofreader, Knowadays Becoming an Editor, and ACES/Poynter Institute Introductory Certificate in Editing courses. I am about to start Phase 2 of the Transcript Proofreading Academy (for proofreading legal transcripts). - What's your favorite thing about your proofreading or editing work?
My favorite thing is seeing the impact my clients' words have on the world. - What causes you the most frustration in your work?
I get the most frustrated when Microsoft Word doesn't do what I want it to do. 😆 - What tips would you like to share with other proofreaders and editors?
Keep track of every question a client or potential client asks you! The question will most likely come up again, so having your answer saved somewhere will save you so much time when it's asked again.

This is the second week in a row that Harley has appeared in my plant photo of the week. 😊 My philodendrons are happy near this window that gets bright light each afternoon. |
