Over the next seven days, turn your attention to joy - the kind of joy that sneaks up on you and finds you where you might not expect it to. Like when a summer breeze finds you at just the right moment, or a butterfly seems to appear out of nowhere. It’s easy to miss those sparks of joy when your to-do list is long and your mind is full.
So, why be on the lookout for them? Well, in addition to the warm fuzzies you feel, joy boosts your well-being through memory enhancement, deepened social bonds, greater resilience, and a broader mindset. Who knew?!
Here’s how to make it happen:
Notice - Understand what joy is for you and what makes it easier to find. What does joy feel like to you? Where in your body do you feel joy, and what sensations go along with it? When and where do you typically feel joy?
Nurture - When joy-filled moments appear, allow space for them to expand. Pause to soak in the experience, put down your phone, and cherish the feelings of joy.
Practice - Create opportunities for joy to appear:
- Pause for 2 minutes to hone in on your five senses.
- Shift to a mindset of gratitude.
- Move your body in a way that feels good
- Be in a space or place where joy easily finds you
- Connect with a person with whom you feel joyful
