Fluffy Mutant Snowman Arms

Christmas Eve, and I'm thinking about how art weaves through holiday moments - not as another task, but as a tiny pocket of calm.

That's a lie. It's Christmas Eve. I've just got back from the supermarket because despite having enough food in to last the first few weeks of an apocalypse we ran out of tea bags. I haven't finished wrapping presents. The cat keeps trying to eat the Christmas tree and the studio (kitchen table) has well and truly been commandeered by glittery chaos (also great for my anxiety with a cat with pica tendencies).

I did, however, find some time to do some sketching this week and I have a fool-proof method for drawing snowy trees.
Build Your Skills

Most artists get stuck trying to capture every intricate detail of a landscape. The secret to snowy trees? Think "fluffy mutant snowman arms" and let go of perfection.

Quick Technique:
  • Start with a three-pronged snowman arm
  • Add extra prongs (that's the mutant bit)
  • Make them fluffy
  • Add hints of green underneath
  • Dust with blue or violet shadows
  • Draw the arms sticking out in multiple directions, and arrange them into a skirt shape
Creative Task
A Festive Challenge:
  1. Grab three pencils (white, green, blue/violet) and toned paper
  2. Find a quiet moment between festive chaos
  3. Sketch a snowytree
Only have white paper? Swap white for a cool grey.
