If you remember this, pleeeease tell me. I don't want to be the only person who has this living in their head rent-free.

Anyway.

We’re talking about motivation this week..or more, accurately—the lack of it.

TLDR: Motivation

Motivation

I used to think motivation was a willpower thing.

Why wouldn't I?

I did certain things with the power of 1,000 suns, and other things I couldn’t start—no matter how hard I tried.

Adults telling me I was a stubborn ass probably didn’t help.

It had to be willpower, right?

Nope. Not when you have ADHD—motivation is about as dependable as gas station sushi.

The imbalance of motivation
is in your brain, not your control.

Hellooo Executive Dysfunction!!

ADHD Fact:
Your brain doesn't have enough dopamine. And dopamine is a motivation chemical.

Less dopamine = less motivation.

Neurotypical brains can get motivated by how important something is and even future rewards.

But your brain could give a shit about how important something. And future rewards?

 Nope.

Your brain sees time as “now” and “not now”, and you’ll take those rewards now, please.

What to Do in a Pinch

Your brain is your brain and you can’t pull motivation out of your ass on demand.

So, when you need motivation in a pinch: PINCH.

(Puns always intended)

PINCH is an acronym for what actually motivates ADHD brains.
  • Passion
  • Interest
  • Novelty
  • Challenge
  • Hurry (urgency)

Let's look closer ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Passion: put meaning and value behind the task. Struggling with content? Pick a hill you’ll die on. Write about it. When it matters to you, it stokes the flame.

Interest: what’s today’s brain worm? Is there a thread you can follow? Go where your brain is already engaging—it’ll get you started

Novelty: Change something. Work in a different location, use voice to text instead of typing. Doesn't have to be big. A little switcheroo might be all ya need to get started.

Challenge: make a game/compete against yourself. Like, your next post has to be 5 sentences or less. ADHD brains light up and eat little challenges like Pac-Man.

Hurry: Time it! Do the most you can in 7 minutes. Or set a deadline like the end of a song. Made up urgency works just fine.

Here Comes the But…

PINCH is a handy acronym and a good way to spark motivation.

But if you're trying the things and it just ain't happening, pay attention.

Might be your body telling you to take a break.

And that's okay.

Unless something really bad is going to happen if you don't do that thing right now—don't try to force motivation.

A little PINCH may very well work for you tomorrow.
