The sheer hubris, right?

This week we're talking about you…talking about you.

So, if writing an About Section or promoting what you do feels terrifying—hi, this one's for you.

TLDR: About Me (You)

  • Why talking about yourself is so hard

  • Emotional weight and past experiences

  • The “what do I say” traps you fall into

  • The reframe and what you can do

  • If it still feels too spicy, I got you

Please Don't Make Me

I'd rather step on a Lego than participate in an icebreaker.

Maybe several Legos.
  • I don't want to tell you about me.
  • Nope, not my favorite color
  • Or my best summer vacation
I'll keep all that to myself, thanks.

If you relate to this, you RELATE.

So why is talking about
yourself so fucking hard??

Let's Look to the Past

Past Experience with ADHD:
Being yourself hasn't always been encouraged, has it?
  • Be less loud
  • Be less weird
  • Just be less
No one wants to hear about your latest hyperfixation or the Reddit rabbithole you fell into at 2 am.

You don't know what's too weird or too much.

You just know you don't want to stand out.

And when you run your own business, things get heavier. Not only are you supposed to stand out

You have the added weight of
  • needing to sound credible and make money

  • adding value to your lived experience

  • not knowing what's relevant or helpful

And good god, what if you sound like you're bragging?

It's like standing naked under fluorescent lights while 10 strangers stare at you with clipboards.

The About Me Traps

Unfortunately, talking/writing about yourself (at least a little) is like a tax for being human. And…sometimes it goes a little sideways.

Over-Do It:
You list every credential from kindergarten through college. All the letters after your name. You talk like some lofty asshole, not because you are one, but because that's credible, right?

Soften the Edges:
Every part of your life has a footnote. A qualifier. You sand the edges off your achievements. Sure, you did the things, but here's why they don't count. Sorry babe, no bonus points for humility.

The Drying Rack:
You've been told to tone it down your whole life, so you tone it all the way down. You were born. You grew up. Now you do this thing. Terms and conditions have more sparkle.

Oversharing:
You leave out nothing. NOTHING. You talk about everything from how you cut your sandwiches to the 17 year journey to pick a niche. It's pretty fun, but your audience is left reeling.

Take A Look

Go take a look at your about section or website profile page.

Go ahead, I'll wait.

Did you fall into one of those traps?

The Reframe

Your About section isn't to brag, prove yourself, or talk about your childhood trauma. It's far less spicy than all that.

You're just creating context.

  • Where are you coming from?
  • What are you doing?
  • What do you care about?

You don't need to list every credential or every single job you've ever had.

Please don't do that.

You're just telling the parts of your story that build connection and context.

Fix Your About

Set a timer for 10 minutes

Write a dusty ass about section. Seriously, channel the most boring, vanilla-oatmeal, robotic HR vibe you can.

Then, reset the timer for 10 minutes.

This time, write the epic About Me version. The one where you’re so fabulous you fart glitter, and your life story is more colorful than Lisa Frank art.

No overthinking
and no editing, okay?

Once you have the two versions, show them to a trusted human and ask which one they prefer.

Spoiler alert: it's gonna be the spicy one 💜

But you're not gonna post that one.
Let's be honest, it would probably send your nervous system into orbit.

Instead, you're gonna put the two versions together and pull out the good stuff. Because the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Think of it like baking: you combine the dry ingredients, then the wet ones. Better results that way.

Once it's finished, post it.
And tell me about it, please?

Still Feel Too Spicy?

I know this isn't easy, and I'm not gonna tell you it is. You're butting up against a lifetime of experience and your nervous system is gonna be…well, nervous.

But you don't have to stay stuck.

I'm here to help. So, if your About Section still sounds like someone else wrote it, or you want an expert set of eyes on your stuff, pop in for an Alchemy Hour.

I'll help you sound
as awesome as you are.

Heads Up

I'd planned to send you a surprise email on Sunday, but I'm currently fighting off a virus, or as my husband says, the dreaded lurgies.

So just a heads up—I'll drop in your inbox again this week—with what I recently learned about future planning, financial fear, and carrying the water.

That's all for now.

I'll see you soon.
Until then…

Do not accept rides from strange men. And remember, all men are strange.

Neurodivergently Yours🍄
