Hey, Destination Fun-seekers! Travel days can be exciting, but they can also feel stressful if you are not prepared. Over the years, I have found that a few simple practices can make a big difference in how calm and organized my airport experience feels, whether I'm heading out for a weekend escape or . an extended getaway. These go-to airport prep tips help me start my trip off right. |

1. Check your documents before you leave home. Before you head out, take a quick minute to make sure your travel documents are ready to go. That means your ID, passport, boarding passes, and anything else you might need should be easy to grab when you need them. If you are flying within the U.S. and using your driver’s license, be sure it is REAL ID-compliant. |
2. Make sure your layover time is sufficient. If your trip includes connecting flights, this is one detail I always pay close attention to. A connection that looks fine on paper can feel very tight if one flight is delayed, if the airport is large, or if I need to change terminals. I recommend allowing enough layover time so you are not rushing from one gate to the next with no breathing room. A good connection can make the whole trip feel much smoother, while a tight one can add unnecessary stress before your vacation even begins. |
3. Download your airline app and travel apps ahead of time. I always recommend downloading your airline app before you leave for the airport. It can help you stay on top of gate changes, boarding updates, and delays, and it often makes travel day a lot less stressful. If you are using a hotel app or rental car app, having those ready ahead of time can save you from scrambling once you arrive. A little pre-trip setup goes a long way when plans change unexpectedly. |
4. Check your bag rules before you pack. Before you zip up your suitcase, it is worth taking a quick look at your airline’s baggage rules. Carry-on limits, checked bag fees, liquid restrictions, and prohibited items can vary, and knowing the rules ahead of time helps avoid surprises at the airport. I have found that clients feel much better when they know exactly what to expect before they arrive. It is one of those little details that can save time and frustration. |
5. Keep essentials in your personal item. I like to encourage clients to pack the things they would not want to be without in their personal item. That includes medications, glasses, headphones, snacks, travel documents, and anything else you may want easy access to during the flight. If your checked bag is delayed, or if you have a long travel day ahead, having those essentials with you can make a big difference. I also pack a fresh change of clothes in my carry-on, just in case my luggage doesn't arrive when I do. Having those essentials with me makes it much easier to stay relaxed and prepared, even if there is an unexpected surprise. |
6. Charge your devices before you go. A fully charged phone is one of the most important travel tools you can have. I always recommend charging your phone, tablet, and portable charger before leaving home, and keeping a charging cable in your carry-on just in case. Your phone may be your boarding pass, your map, your entertainment, and your way to stay in touch all in one. If there is a delay or a schedule change, having a charged device makes everything easier to manage. |
7. Give yourself extra time. Don't cut your airport arrival timing too close. Traffic, long security lines, crowded check-in counters, and busy parking lots can all slow things down, especially during busy travel periods. Leaving a little earlier than you think you need to, gives you a much calmer start to your trip. It also gives you time to breathe, grab something to eat, and get to your gate without feeling rushed. |
8. Stay flexible and give yourself a little grace. Even with the best planning, travel days can still bring a few surprises. Weather, traffic, crowded airports, and flight changes happen, and the more flexible you can be, the easier it is to handle them. I always remind myself that the goal is not perfection, it is a smooth start and a good overall travel experience. A little patience and a little flexibility can make all the difference. |

My travel day always feels better when I've taken care of the small details ahead of time. Once they are in place, it is much easier for me to relax and enjoy what comes next. I hope these tips will be useful to you, too! |
