Hey, Destination Fun-seekers!

With Fourth of July weekend just around the corner, few things feel more fitting than a celebration centered on one of summer’s sweetest pleasures. We’re a true ice cream-loving family, and as proud owners of a Cuisinart ice cream maker, we especially enjoy concocting our own creations and discovering memorable ice cream shops whenever our travels take us somewhere new. The following collection highlights places with their own distinct personalities, offering flavors that range from comforting and nostalgic to bold, unexpected, and wonderfully creative. Across the U.S., these shops are serving scoops that are as fun to think about as they are to taste.
Here’s a sweet selection of 16 ice cream shops known for flavors that stand out from the crowd, organized by region:

East
Fortunes Ice Cream, Tivoli, NY — This small-batch shop leans into seasonal ingredients and playful combinations like basil blackberry crumble, spicy mango, and celery sorbet. Housed in a cheerful blue former barn, it has the kind of charm that makes the stop feel just as memorable as the scoop.
Sugar Hill Creamery, New York City, NY — A Harlem favorite with rotating flavors like cream cheese with croissants and guava sauce, Cafe Touba with peanut brittle and cardamom, and A$AP Rocky Road. Its menu also reflects the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage, giving each scoop a real sense of place.
Franklin Fountain, Philadelphia, PA — This Old City favorite blends nostalgic atmosphere with flavors like Almond Butter Cherry, Cotton Candy, and Sea Salt Caramel. The old-fashioned presentation, from the décor to the serving containers, makes it feel like a step back in time.
Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats, Alexandria, VA — What began as a vintage ice cream truck is now a retro-inspired shop inside a historic 1930s ice house. Creative treats like the doughnutwich, made with apple cider cake doughnuts and sweet potato pie custard, keep the menu as playful as the setting.
Midwest
Black Dog Gelato, Chicago, IL — Technically gelato, but too creative to ignore, with flavors like Shoyu Brownie and Goat Cheese Cashew Caramel. On Wednesdays, the shop also offers dairy-free scoops for guests looking for something different.
Browndog Creamery and Dessert Bar, Oak Park, MI — This lively dessert bar combines ice cream and cocktails in imaginative ways, from Jacked-Up Carrot Cake to beer floats. Flight-style servings make it easy to sample a little of everything.
Sebastian Joe’s, Minneapolis, MN — Handmade daily in rotating batches, this Minneapolis favorite always has something unexpected in the case. With whimsical flavors like Pavarotti and Nicollet Avenue Pothole, it turns a simple scoop into a conversation starter.
Clementine’s Naughty & Nice Ice Cream, St. Louis, MO — With boozy “naughty” flavors and spirit-free “nice” options, this playful shop lives up to its name. Standouts like Maple Bourbon with Candied Pecans and Gooey Butter Cake are joined by vegan flavors that are especially rich and convincing.
Lick Honest Ice Cream, Austin, TX — This Texas-based favorite keeps things hyper-local, using ingredients from nearby producers, including dairy from just outside Waco. Flavors like Banana Nut Fudge and Tequila Lime Coconut reflect both the region and the shop’s creative spirit.
West
Wild Scoops, Anchorage, AK — This Alaska favorite celebrates local ingredients in flavors like fireweed, spruce tips, and Redoubts Revenge. Even the waffle cones get special treatment, with notes of cinnamon and star anise baked right in.
Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream, San Diego, CA — Freshly made each day, this shop serves flavors like Graham Central Station, Lavender Honeycomb, Mango Watermelon Swirl, and Oreo Caramel Latte. With shakes, sundaes, waffle bowls, and even a free puppy cone, it offers something for every sweet tooth in the family.
Humphry Slocombe, San Francisco, CA — Bold, inventive flavors like Coconut Key Lime Pie and Pink Jesus have made this Bay Area favorite a standout. Guests can visit the Dogpatch shop or the smaller Ferry Building location for a scoop with plenty of personality.
Wanderlust Creamery, Torrance, CA — True to its name, this shop turns ice cream into a global tasting tour with flavors like Sticky Mango Rice, Japanese Neapolitan, Taiwanese Treasure Bowl, and Oaxacan Dark Chocolate. It has additional locations in Atwater Village, Fairfax, Pasadena, Sawtelle Japantown, Venice, Irvine, and Costa Mesa, making it easier to track down a scoop with international flair.
La Lecheria, Santa Fe, NM — With flavors like Red Chile Honey, Prickly Pear Margarita Sorbet, Sweet Corn, and Avocado, this Southwest standout brings local character to every scoop. Chef-owner Joel Coleman’s culinary background shows up in thoughtful, unexpected ways.
Fifty Licks, Portland, OR — Known for rich custards and creative flavors like Thai Rice, Cornbread with Honey Butter, and pineapple with Thai basil, this Portland favorite keeps the menu interesting. Multiple locations around the city make it easy to track down a scoop.
Hellenika Cultured Creamery, Seattle, WA — This Pike Place Market shop churns out cultured gelato-style scoops made with local milk, Greek yogurt cultures, and kefir grains. Flavors like Tim Tam Slam and Apple Pie have a tangy, distinctive edge that sets them apart.
