Happy Friday!
We're taking our kids out of school early today so we can take them to Universal Studios. When my husband dropped my kids off at school yesterday, he told them NOT to tell anyone we were going to Universal. We take our kids out enough for appointments and necessary things, that we just didn't think it was appropriate to have another absence for something like this. When he picked them up from school, my daughter was very excited to report that she did NOT in fact tell anyone we were going to Universal because instead she, “told them we're going to Hawaii!”

In retrospect, we should've been more specific on what she could say, but I guess that was a valuable lesson not to teach our kids to lie.

Most eye opening podcast I've heard in awhile
I listened to Steven Bartlett's podcast this week with Dr. Matthew Walker. It was one of the most eye-opening podcasts I've listened to. He called sleep “the most beguiling topic in all of science," and after listening, I understand why.

The episode is 2 hours long, and he covers everything from the science behind why we have morning and evening people, how ⅓ of couples that break up site sleep as the reason (I couldn't believe this!), what a sleep divorce books like, his appeal for governments to create public health campaigns around sleep, why deep sleep is so important, and how things like caffeine, alcohol, and sleeping pills can keep us from getting it. He covers how sleep is intertwined with so many health and mental issues, what to do when you can't sleep in the middle of the night, the benefits of dreaming, the cleansing system in your brain, and how too much sleep could have just as many negative affects on your health as too little.

He talked about his skepticism with meditation but how he couldn't escape the overwhelming data and benefits it has on a good night's sleep. I found the conversation around “microsleeps” especially fascinating--if you're under slept, you can fall asleep for mini seconds and not realize it, and it can pose a danger to things you do like driving. I've barely touched the surface here, but I highly recommend the episode. If you can't listen, I wanted to at least share actionable items he shared on getting a better sleep:

Regularity (keeping sleep and wake up time the same daily), darkness (removing light in the room can make you sleepy, try to darken the room an hour before bed), temperature (most people sleep in a room that's too hot. Keep it around 65 degrees--even if you have to wear socks or extra blankets), clear your mind (walk it out, meditate before bed, listen to a detailed story like the calm app) and lastly, avoid things that fragment your sleep (sleep aids and alcohol may make you sleepy, but they are a sedative and they affect your deep sleep).

Not the sexiest of topic this week I know, but if you listen to that episode, you HAVE to tell me what you think. So good.
Love this.
Going to try this.

This week's community spotlight
On Instagram this week, I asked you all “What's a little thing that reveals a lot about people." Some of you had me really thinking, while others had hilariously specific thoughts. I had hundreds of repeats, and so I consolidated those on the list linked here, and below is a snapshot of some of my favs.
