Nedra Glover Tawwab was on the podcast We Can Do Hard Things. I listened to the newer episode about family drama, and one a year ago about boundaries. (she's got 2 NYT bestsellers that I've added to my list to read)
I've always found the conversation about boundaries to be fascinating, because I'm the chick answering the work call from my hospital bed, and saying yes to everything in fear of not being liked. According to a study they cited on the podcast, people w/ boundaries have better sleep, less burnout, longer lasting and healthier relationships, less stress, and more joy. Well sh*t, sign me up.
I highly recommend listening to both (especially if you're a people pleaser), but there's one part from the family drama episode that stuck with me. Sharing it below because I'm sure it will resonate with many of you. (direct from Nedra's book)
If you have a relationship with someone only because of the label it carries (sister, cousin, father..etc) you don't have a relationship, you have an obligation. Unconditional love does not mean unconditional access.
Oufff. I really had to sit with that last one.
