Since I lost my full vision and ability to drive, the more time that passed, the more anxious I felt about getting behind the wheel again. I hadn't driven in awhile, and certainly had never driven with one eye. Making the decision to purchase a car last week was a roller coaster of emotions. There were 3 things that got me through it that may resonate with you:
1. From the book, Love For Imperfect Things: "What distresses us is less the circumstances we find ourselves in, and more the energy we spend in resisting them."
If I had put more energy into trying to drive instead of worrying about what would happen if I started, I would've been driving sooner. So if there's something you're dreading doing, take this as your sign to start already.
2. A video Marisa Peer posted on her instagram stated: “If you're scared of change, remember this: If you control the direction of change in your life and make it change for the better, you won't be scared of change. Don't focus on the worst possible outcome, because if you think about what can go wrong, your mind starts to make that real. And your mind's job is to make your thoughts real. Focus on what could go right, how amazing it could be.”
I was totally thinking of the worst case scenario, and it only heightened my anxiety.
3. Oprah was talking about how she hikes a lot on the podcast We Can Do Hard Things this week. She never focuses on where she's trying to get to, but instead, she consciously stops, takes breaths, and turns around to see how far she's come. “That's how I get myself to the top. Not by focusing on the top, but looking back at how far I've come.” Taking it step by step.
I loved that.
Back in an August newsletter, I shared a
rainbow video about making your world smaller that I haven't stopped thinking about. It was the main reason I finally had that kick in the butt. If you haven't seen it, it's incredibly powerful.
