Facial masks are the unsung heroes of a comprehensive skincare routine. Of course, no facial mask is a miracle worker, but together with a good skin care regimen, a facial mask formulated with quality ingredients can improve your skin's texture and appearance. My experience when I use a facial mask: "Why don't I do this more often?!"

Facial mask benefits can includes detoxification (especially clay-based masks), hydration, anti-aging attributes, brightening and evening out skin tone (glycolic acid and vitamin C masks), improved product absorption, as well as not-to-be-discounted self-care and de-stressing.

Masks hold active ingredients or moisture next to your skin. The main ingredient, for example, vitamin C, retinoids, or AHA acids, gets deeper into your skin in a much shorter amount of time than a serum or lotion. Results are often immediate and visible.

How often should you use a facial mask? That depends on your skin type, your individual skin needs, and the kind of mask you're using. Some masks are best used once per week, while others can be used more frequently. Some masks are recommended to be used in the morning and others at night (particularly masks that include AHA acids). (Always follow a specific mask's instructions regarding frequency of use and what time of day is best.)

Determine your skin care goals when deciding on the type of mask to use: Are you experiencing dry skin? Do you have large pores that need cleansing? Does your skin look dull?

It's recommended to follow facial mask application with a toner after washing off the mask to be sure to re-balance your skin's pH (read more about toner in the previous newsletter).

Do You Know Beautycounter is a Certified B Corporation? This year’s B Corp theme is #WeGoBeyond, which highlights how the B Corp community “goes beyond” the status quo to advocate and take action to create real systemic change.

As a certified B Corporation from the very beginning, we’re proud to celebrate being a part of this global movement. This year, we plan to continue to spread the word on how businesses can be a force for good and encourage you to reflect on how they (and you, too) can go beyond.

Wondering what a B Corporation is? B stands for benefit, and it means that, unlike the traditional corporate structure, these companies consider benefits to people and the planet, as well as profit. Companies that are verified by B Lab (the non-profit working group behind B Corps) meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. They use the power of business to help solve social and environmental problems.

Becoming a certified B Corporation is a difficult accomplishment. To be certified as a B Corp, a brand must meet high standards. The certification process itself is rigorous: one in every three companies typically make the cut, and a reassessment is required every three years.
