It’s time that I admit one of my faults, First name / friend...

It’s nothing crazy or anything, but I’ve noticed that throughout a lot of my content, I’ve made the assumption that everyone is obsessed with planning as much as I am.

And even if you don’t identify as the Type A friend that loves a spreadsheet and detailed itinerary, I’ve taken it upon myself to make you that way.

But lately I’ve realized that’s really not my job at all.

If the world was filled with only Type A, planning obsessed people, that would leave no room for the spontaneous, go with the flow people, that a scheduled (and maybeeeee sometimes rigid 🫣) person like me really needs.

Like for real, if I didn’t have “go with the flow” people in my life (like my sister, husband, and most of my best friends), I would never get to experience the joy that spontaneity can sometimessss bring.

So, let this be my public confession that I’ve been trying too hard to make sure that everyone adopts the same blog content planning strategies as me.

But before I go any further, don’t hear what I’m not saying…

What I’m NOT saying is that planning isn’t necessary. I really do believe that planning – specifically when it comes to your blog content – can make a huge difference in all parts of your business, not just the blog part of it.

(And let me just add that Type A planning tendencies also come in handy when you’re having a destination wedding on the other side of the country or going to New York City for only 48 hours, but I digress…)

So, yes I will unapologetically keep sharing the importance of planning your blog content 3 months in advance because I believe in it that much.

But because I know that there’s not just one right way to do something, I think it’s time I offer some mental shifts when you’re introduced to a strategy or hear an idea that doesn’t 100% align with you, like my blog content planning process for example.

So no, this is NOT another email to tell you to start planning your blog content like I do – even though you’ll probably hear more of that one day – today is not that day.

Adopt The Principle, Not The Formula
4 Mental Shifts To Make When A Strategy Doesn’t Align With You

We live in a very “do ABC to get XYZ” world and while I’m all for a step-by-step process, sometimes it benefits you even more when you learn someone else’s playbook, but apply what they teach in a DIFFERENT way.

For example, just yesterday I was listening to this podcast episode on The Skinny Confidential and I LOVED what the guest, Kat Cole, was saying, but she was mostly speaking in the context of leading a team.

I could’ve listened to that and been like, “oh… well, I don’t have a team, so this doesn’t apply to me,” but what I did instead was listen to her concept and think about where else it could be applied in my life or business.

It’s the mindset of adopting a PRINCIPLE instead of obsessing over the formula.

(One of the concepts she mentioned was super simple and really tangible, by the way. She calls it the Hotshot Rule and it’s a practice of asking, answering, and acting.)

This also occurred last year when I was giving a guest presentation to a group of real estate agents. The leader asked if I could come in and give some tangible tips for how her team could level up their listing descriptions.

Even though this topic didn’t have anything to do with blogs, I was so excited to create content around this.

Essentially what I did was present the well known HICCA formula that people are often taught to use for social media and demonstrate how this same PRINCIPLE could be applied basically anywhere.

When I say there were so many lightbulb moments… 💡

The point is, allow yourself to adopt something that was originally meant for one specific thing and apply it elsewhere.

Make the strategy, tactic, formula, etc. work FOR YOU.

And if you’re struggling to figure that out, consider: how can this best fit into my life or business, so that it’s ACTUALLY effective?

Here’s one personal example of how I’ve done this this year. ⬇️

I love the idea of incorporating a “To-Done List” in my business. I first heard about the concept from Kleist Creative and I even tried to start implementing the amazing Notion template that she created.

But even as a Notion stan, I could not for the life of me get this process to work. I always forgot about it and never really did anything with it even though I had good intentions.

At the end of 2023, I wished so badly that I would have found a way to implement this concept because I really wanted an easy way to look back and see what I truly accomplished throughout the year.

So this year, I took the concept but created a different system that works FOR ME, which is just a simple Slack channel where I can write what I accomplish at the end of each day.

Same concept, different system.

For more on this idea of adjusting a strategy to work for you instead of trying to copy and paste, make sure you read this week's blog post. ⬇️
