Hello First name / friend,

Happy Thursday!  I hope your having a great week.  Spring is springing here in southern Minnesota and it sure is nice!  I think we have 6 weeks of school left and it's starting to feel like it.

I have the new Irish Chain pattern to get out (next week!) and then maybe I'll plan some scrappy quilts for summer.  I always like to work on something like that over the summer when my sewing hours are a little more sporadic.

Maybe I'll go for this teeny tiny postage stamp quilt.  I think I made this block last summer.  It's kind of ridiculous how small it is but it would be a fun way to use up even the smallest scraps.  Those squares finish at one inch.

I made this postage stamp quilt below a few summers back.  Although, I've been informed it's not an actual postage stamp since the squares finish at 1.5 inch.

I used this tutorial by Red Pepper Quilts.
I went to look for this one on the blog and apparently I never added it!  It's a good thing I haven't gotten rid of it yet.  This one uses all Bonnie and Camille fabrics and a linen shot cotton as the background.

Another option I would like to make is one using all Ruby Star Society fabrics and maybe a dark background.  We shall see!  Thanks for letting me talk through my summer sewing plans :)

This past week I've been sewing away on my Scrappy Arrows quilt.  I'm really enjoying this one.

I went scrappy on scrappy.  I was able to cut most of my low volume background from my scrap bins.  Have I mentioned how much I love scrappy cutting??  :)  I find digging through my bins and cutting so dang relaxing.  So this was a real treat for me.

Speaking of those scrap bins… I ordered a couple of the new ones I found just to make sure they are indeed similar.  The good news is that they are pretty close!

The sizing is slightly different.  They are about an inch deeper and about 1.5 inches narrower.
My originals are the bottom bin with the purple fabrics and these new ones are the top bin.
Here's the link for these bins.

I have the large size.  They also have an extra large one that would be nice if you have the space!

I tried quite a few different scrap bin options before I found these.  These have worked out so well for me.  I love how easy it is to toss new scraps into them and how accessible they are to use.

MY FINISHED HAND QUILTED COMPASS STAR
I finished up my current hand quilting project this past week!  I'm always a little sad to be done.  I don't have another quilt ready to go for hand quilting yet and really nothing planned.

This one took about 7 weeks.  I opted for 1 inch spaced lines that meet in the center.

Pattern - Compass Star
Fabrics - Wildflower Wovens by Suzy Quilts for Art Gallery Fabrics
Threads - Suzy's 8 wt set with Aurifil
I also did a rainbow of color on this one!  I used the Suzy Quilts 8 wt thread set by Aurifil.  I thought it would pair well with her Wildflower Wovens that this quilt is made from.

You can see the different colors in this close up.

I taught myself how to hand quilt a couple of years ago and have found a way that works for me.  I have to say, it's really hard to go through all of those bad stitches to start getting good ones.  There is just no way around it…. practice makes improvement.

I'm so glad I persevered this time because now i really enjoy it.  I tried hand quilting many years ago and gave up on it.

If you are wanting to get started then you might find Suzy's video tutorial helpful.

COMING SOON!
This new Irish Chain quilt called Lucky Links will be out next week!  You can use fat eighths for the blocks and then need some yardage for the background and chains.  It's block based and sews up nicely with some strip piecing.  So I'll be back next week to share more :)
