A few years ago my husband heard my knees crunching like glowsticks. He winced and asked me if they hurt.

Well, duh.

He insisted I go to the doctor.
Turns out, your knees aren’t supposed to hurt. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It took a few months of PT, but my knees are okay now. Still crunchy, but I’ve decided it’s a feature.

The point is, painful stuff can get so ingrained it seems normal. After a while, it's just the way things are.

The same thing happens in your business. You gotta intentionally determine where the friction / blocks are and what to do about it.

TLDR on Determine (Barriers)
  • Barriers aren't always obvious.

  • They can show up anywhere in your business.

  • Your mindset matters more than you think!

  • Put your beliefs to the sniff test. Are they true?

Determine Business Barriers

Your business will have aggravations. You're going to have off months. You'll get bored sometimes.

(Truth: You're not going to love everything in your business all the time. Sorry. But, if you’d rather light your taint on fire than do something—that deserves a closer look.)

Real blocks in your business show up as patterns. In other words, consistent areas where you struggle or your business comes up short.

Where is the Friction?

Determining where friction exists in your business can get super granular. I.e., a broken automation turns into a 3 hour Zapier expedition.

Just no. You'll get lost in the sauce. Trust me, I've done it.

Broadstrokes, okay?

You're looking at:
  • Marketing
  • Management
  • Money
  • Mindset
Let's get into it.

Marketing

Think about your marketing:

  • What does it bring up?
  • What about visibility?
  • How does that feel?
  • Are you attracting clients?

If you could instantly change 3 things about your marketing to make it easier or more effective, what would they be?

Write them down.

Management
(I.e., admin with mnemnonic dopamine)

If you dread admin, I see you. Spreadsheets make me more nervous than a long-tail cat in a roomful of rocking chairs.

But the real question is, how is it impacting your business?

I'd ask you to write down 3 things you'd like to change…but I have a spidey sense you might answer, “everything.”

So, instead, ask yourself:
  • What am I doing over and over again that I could automate or delegate?

  • Where specifically am I spending a ton of time and energy on something outside my genius?

  • If I could only outsource one area (email, invoicing, scheduling, etc) what would it be?

Money

I know this can be a touchy one.

  • Take a deep breath
  • Relax your shoulders
  • Feel your feet on the ground.

Ok, now let's get into it.

First and most importantly: how much money do you need to make—i.e., the money it takes to cover your bills/taxes/necessities. If you're not reaching the bare minimum income goals, that's a priority.

But I'm assuming you are making enough to cover the basics, and that's where it gets sticky.

Start here:
  • How do you decide how much is enough?

  • How much money do you want to make? (no right or wrong answer)

  • Are your offers and model set up to achieve your goal?
For example: if you want to make 6 figures - can your offers get you there without stuffing your calendar to bursting and running you ragged?

If not, your offers / pricing
are a barrier to your dream.

Important: not wanting a 6-7-8 figure business is fine! Wanting one is fine. But make that decision for you—not anyone else.

Design for your dream.

For me: A 6 figure business is not currently my dream / goal. Right now, my offers are structured in a way that makes 60 to 75K doable. 90 to 100K would be a stretch. That's by design.

Mindset

“Whether you think you can, or
you think you can't, you're right.”
- Henry Ford

Annoying, but correct. Of all the potential roadblocks and friction in your business, mindset is the biggest

It touches everything!

For example:
  • You can have all the marketing knowledge in the world, but it falls flat when you don't believe in yourself and your offers.

  • If you tell yourself admin is impossibly hard, your brain will do everything possible to prove you right. That's called confirmation bias and it's so fucking real.

  • If you feel psychologically unsafe with money over a certain threshold, you unknowingly cap your income to stay within that zone.

The bad news: Mindset stuff is like peeling an onion for eternity. As long as you're in business, you'll uncover new mindset blocks for the rest of forever.

The good news: The biggest and trickiest mindset barriers come right before you level up. You’re moving into new territory and your mind starts throwing up flags. So, there's that.

Take Aways and Action

You can change how you do something, but if you still feel some kind of way about it, the friction will stay put.

So when something comes up, ask yourself:

  • What do you believe about (x)?

  • What do you believe about your ability to change (x)?

Challenge each belief:
  • Is it true?
  • Is it really true?
  • What would happen if it wasn't?

Here's the Action:

Whenever you find a false or limiting belief, affirm the opposite. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Affirm the opposite, even if it feels untrue. It's like gaslighting for good. Because the stories you tell yourself matter more than you think.
