I love a good breakfast. A southwestern omelet with a big squirt of ketchup and some crispy bacon?

Yes please.

But if you're like me, you gotta be real careful or you'll end up with eggshells in your breakfast.

I know, what do bacon and eggs have to do with your business?

Well, this week we're talking about dismantling your systems that aren't working and developing new ones that do.

Carefully!

Because if you go cracking through your systems all willy nilly, the end results will be a crunchy disaster, right?

So let's get into breaking down and rebuilding that doesn't destroy the kitchen—or your business.

TLDR on Dismantle/Develop
  • Break apart your systems, don't blow them up.

  • Sometimes all a system or belief needs is a little tweak

  • Be honest with yourself about changes and capaacity

  • Test it out, iterate, and then make a new SOP

  • Embrace trial and error as part of the process

Dismantle / Develop

Once you figure out the things that are standing in the way of your business growth, it's time to something about it.

First, you've gotta break apart the system and really look at it.

Whatever it is:
  • Messaging
  • Administration
  • Boundaries
  • Workload, etc

Pick one thing/system you want to work on. Just one. Got it?

Don't know where to start?

I got you.

Breaking apart systems can be tricky. So if you get stuck, check out the specific journal prompts for that thing to help get you moving.

What's happening with your:

Totally Break It Down

Now you're going to break that system or belief all the way down.

Write down each thing, no matter how small.

Remember: your ADHD is big picture. You see things as a whole, and the granular steps can get lost.

For dismantling to work well, get really specific and name each step. That's the most reliable way to find gaps and breakdowns.

Pro Tip: Ask a friend to help you brainstorm system steps.

Pro Tip x 2: Once you have all the steps, try doing the process using only what you've written. If you've gotta do extra stuff to make it work, add those steps.

Take a Good Look
It's time to investigate each step and be ruthless. You're gathering the information you need to develop new systems that support you and your business.

Ask Yourself:
  • Does it need fewer steps?
  • Does it need another step?
  • Does it need a total overhaul?
  • Can you delegate or automate?
  • Does it need another platform?
  • Is it doing what you want it to?

Time to Develop

Once you've got a clear idea of what the dismantled steps look like, it's time to make a plan and act on it.

Here's what to do:
  • Identify changes you want to make
  • Define what success looks like
  • Make the adjustments to the process
  • Test the new thing for a few weeks
  • Iterate and retest or create an SOP

Note: if you're making a huge changes like switching platforms or overhauling it completely, do it in steps.

In other words, don't erase everything you currently have until you've tested the new system.

Science, Bitches!

Important: As you work on dismantling your systems and developing new ones it can be disheartening if a new system doesn't work either.

But think of it like a science experiement and testing a system hypothesis. You're just trying stuff out.

Back to the breakfast metaphor: when it comes to bacon and eggs — the chicken is involved, the pig is committed.

You're involved

The only commitment you have to make is finding what works best for you.
