The thing I did in college that changed everything
Part 3 of 3
If you're just finding this series, here's what you've missed:
Part 1: I joined the Filipino Student Association in college even though I'm not Filipino.
Part 2: I really got involved and learned Tinikling (I even included the YT video of the performance).

(Catch up here → Part 1 | Part 2)

And now we're here. Part 3. The one with the love story that ties it all together.

Let me tell you about Chris.

My husband and I went to the same schools from kindergarten through senior year of high school. We were even in some of the same classes off and on throughout the years.

But we were never really friends.

It wasn't until we were engaged, when my mom was gathering childhood photos for our wedding slideshow, that we found a photo of us sitting right next to each other on the first day of Kindergarten. And we discovered that we were standing right next to each other in our 5th-grade class photo. We've been interacting with each other since we were 5, and we didn't really realize or remember it.

But wait, it gets even ~spookier~!

Fast forward to freshman year of college, and a classmate read my palm randomly in class. And she told me I was going to end up marrying a man named Chris and that I've already known him for a long time. ‼️⁉️

I genuinely could not think of who that would be.

At that point, Chris and I weren't close. We'd gone to school together for over a decade and barely registered on each other's radar. He wasn't even someone I would have thought to put in that category.

I filed the palm reader's prediction away and forgot about it.

Fast forward a year later to joining FAASSU and learning Tinikling. Throughout all this I am posting pictures on facebook and instagram of it all, hanging out at boba spots with my Filipino friends and posting about it, wearing sweatshirts with the Filipino sun and posting about it LOL. Just documenting what I'm up to, like most of us at that time.

And somewhere across the internet, Chris was watching.

Not in a weird way, but in the way that a Filipino guy notices a girl who is now posting things related to his culture... kinda out of the blue. It caught his attention and made him wonder if I was actually Filipino this whole time and he didn't know it (and I honestly get that. That's a valid thing to wonder lol.)

He started liking posts, leaving comments, and consistently trying to get on my radar.

He played the long game.

And eventually he slid into my DMs and told me I was pretty. 😍🙃

We've been together ever since.

And how all of this was coming together behind the scenes still gets me, even now: While I was in that club learning about Filipino culture, I was unknowingly learning about the family I was going to marry into.

The heritage my children carry. The culture that is now woven into my everyday life in the most ordinary and sacred ways.

I never could have planned or orchestrated all of this in my wildest dreams.

I was just saying yes to something that felt right, showing up consistently, and sharing along the way.

And it was building my future the entire time.

I've thought a lot about what ties these three stories together and it's this:
You cannot always see what you're building while you're building it.

The night I walked into that first FAASSU meeting, I wasn't thinking about a husband or a family or a culture that would become my own. I was just showing up for a friend. Trying not to be weird. Hoping I'd be welcome.

But every small yes compounded into something I never could have planned.

Showing up consistently, even when I didn't fully understand why I was there. Going all in, even before I could see the payoff. Sharing it publicly, even when I had no idea who was watching.

This is the part where I bring it back to Pinterest (I know, I know, it's getting predictable lol).

Pinterest is built similarly on the idea that what you put out today compounds in the background and pays off in ways you couldn't have predicted, on a timeline that might feel a little slower than you are used to planning for.

Pinterest asks you to trust the long game.

And I know that's uncomfortable. Because you can't see it working immediately. Because the results come later than you want them to.

But the business owners I've watched build something sustainable on Pinterest are the ones who show up consistently, who go all in before the proof arrives, who keep sharing even when they're not sure who's watching and they're the ones who eventually look back and realize it was building something the whole time.

If any part of this series resonated with you I would love to support you in whatever way makes most sense for your business.

A Peek at My Week

Things that are saving my life right now: Sharing our love story is timely, because I'd say Chris being the best partner and dad is saving my life right now. It's been a busy month and week and Chris is holding it down with the kids and the house while I'm putting in extra hours with work. 🫶

What I did for me this week: I've been doing a lot of reflection on what I want Q3 to look like in life and business and thinking through adjustments I want to make to priortize myself a bit more. Still working through it and making plans so we'll see how it plays out.

What I’m working on: I have three clients who have been preparing for launches, so I've been supporting them behind the scenes to get ready!
