about

For the final block of our series, I was inspired by the place that I call home and the city blocks for which it has become synonymous with. For the block design itself, I dug deep into the vaults of quilt blocks (aka Barbara Brackman’s Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Blocks) and discovered the original Salt Lake City block and set out to put my own spin on the traditional block.

I knew that I wanted to create a block that would be simple to piece, yet impactful when combined with other blocks, so I thought outside the box and divided it into just a quarter segment of the original block. I then added a checker motif (my favorite) to represent the Salt Lake Grid and finally, some log cabin piecing that re-centers on my theme of “Home”.

block tips

This is a quick make and you will love how the inverse version pairs with the original to create a continuous design!
As always, it is recommended that you read through the pattern in its entirety before beginning. Additionally, this is a great chance to ensure that your scant ¼” seam allowance is accurate, as you will need your log cabin piecing to be accurate as you build your block outward from the corner.
