Quilt Top Assembly (with Sashing and Borders)
  1. Lay out and arrange blocks in preferred order in a 4x5 block arrangement.
  2. Cut (5) 1.5” x WOF strips; subcut (15) 1.5" x 12.5" small sashing strips.
  3. Sew (1) small sashing strip to the right side the first three blocks in each row.
  4. Sew quilt blocks in each row together.
Traditional Method:
  1. Cut (5) 1.5” x WOF strips; sew strips together end to end to create one long sashing strip.
  2. Measure the average width of each row (should be 51.5”); using the measured width, subcut (4) sashing strips.
  3. Sew sashing strips to the bottom of rows 1-4.
  4. Sew all rows together.
  5. Cut (6) 3.5” x WOF strips; sew together end to end to create one longer border strip.
  6. Measure the average length of the quilt top (should be 64.5”); using the measured length, subcut (2) border strips.
  7. Sew border strips to the left and right side of the quilt top.
  8. Measure the average width of the quilt top (should be 57.5”); using the measured width, subcut (2) border strips.
  9. Sew border strips to the top and bottom side of the quilt top.
“Hack” Method:
  1. Cut (5) 1.5” x WOF strips; sew strips together end to end to create one long sashing strip.
  2. Sew the long sashing strip to the bottom of the first row leaving a ½" overhang of sashing at the beginning.
  3. Cut the sashing strip leaving a ½" overhang at the end.
  4. Repeat on rows 2-4.
  5. Sew all rows together and square up trimming off all sashing overhang.
  6. Cut (6) 3.5” x WOF strips; sew together end to end to create one longer border strip.
  7. Sew the long border strip to the left side of quilt top and trim.
  8. Repeat on all sides.
 
Finishing
  1. Piece together backing fabric using a 1/2" seam allowance.
  2. Make quilt sandwich by basting quilt to the batting and backing. Use desired basting method.
  3. Quilt as desired.
  4. Trim and square up quilt.
  5. Cut (7) 2.5” x WOF strips. Prep strips and bind using desired method.
