Hello First name / friend

We had an absolutely awful GI thing tear through our house, taking us out like dominoes. It's been a rough two weeks but I'll spare you the details! A silver-lining moment was this stellar morning that we spent at the beach. The sunshine and fresh air were just what we needed. We walked down the beach to this driftwood tree that we've played on before. Its roots face up the slope, and two huge trunks point to the Salish Sea. My daughter took the ‘top bunk’ and I took the ‘bottom bunk’. We listened to the waves, watched the Great Blue Herons fishing and soaked in the rays.

Missing school, pushing work aside and going to the beach reminded me of those early Covid lockdown days. We always, always felt better when we went into nature to explore, play and relax. Sure, my worried monkey-mind still chattered on at me, but away from the distractions of the household and digital devices, and surrounded by the sensory experiences of nature, my nervous symptom would relax. In nature, our field of attention e x p a n d s and our bodies and brains sigh with relief.

Experiencing nature through a child's view is also a wonderfully mindful practice. They notice things we pass over, they ask questions, and they feel with their whole bodies.

This week, I invite you to take yourself on a nature walk in a place you enjoy. As you walk
or sit, consider these words:

s l o w

e x p a n d

f e e l

After your experience, consider journaling or drawing your observations and feelings. How can you bring some of the awareness you experience during this time to the rest of your day/week?

If you'd like share your work or thoughts on the topic, I'd love for you to reply to this email or share in our online community. I so very much enjoy seeing and hearing your reactions to Mindful Mondays.

PS. Next Monday I'll be travelling after a retreat in the Kootenays. I'm not sure if I'll get time to pre-write a Mindful Monday or if I'll give myself a Free Pass. For those of you new to the list, check out the archive below my signature.

       May you be well,
-Nicole
